Product Overview

Allume di Rocca Natural Alum Block - 100g

Product

Reduce razor burn & stop minor bleeds with natural alum. Made from potassium alum, the Alum Block has antiseptic and astringent properties to help close pores, soothe irritation, reduce razor burn and close up minor nicks or cuts. After shaving, rinse and dry the skin then gently rub the moist Alum Block over the entire 'shaved' area of the face. Use immediately after your shave, and prior to applying aftershave lotion or balm finish.

How to use

Firstly, wet the Alum Block with lukewarm water, then gently take it across the face, following all the areas which have been shaved. Avoid applying too close to the lips. Now apply a moisturising balm (Proraso is excellent!) and then seal the deal with a dash of your favourite Aftershave Lotion. Rinse thoroughly with hot water and then leave to dry

Recommended for

Quick and easy treatment of small nicks, cuts and blood spotting as a result of shaving. Also suitable for insect bites and stings. Suits all skin types

Grooming Tip

In the 1950's, men sporting crew-cut or flat-top hairstyles sometimes applied alum to their front short hairs as an alternative to pomade. When the hair dried, it would stay up all day!

Ingredients

Potassium alum, aqua.

Brand Information

Alum

Allume di Rocca. Egyptians reportedly used the coagulant alum as early as 1500 BC to reduce the visible cloudiness (turbidity) in the water. Alum (known as turti/sphatika in local languages) was also used for water treatment by Indians for thousands of years. Ayurveda describes sphatika as an astringent, haemostatic, antiseptic. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic and antibiotic properties. Alum in block form (usually potassium alum) is used as a blood coagulant. Styptic pencils containing aluminium sulfate or potassium aluminium sulfate are used as astringents to prevent bleeding from small shaving cuts. Alum blocks are commonly found in pharmacies in India. Alum may also be used in depilatory waxes used for the removal of body hair, or applied to freshly waxed skin as a soothing agent. In the 1950's, men sporting crew-cut or flat-top hairstyles sometimes applied alum to their front short hairs as an alternative to pomade. When the hair dried, it would stay up all day. Alum's antiperspirant and antibacterial properties also contribute to its traditional use as an underarm deodorant. It has been used for this purpose in Europe; Mexico; Thailand, where it is called Sarn-Som; throughout Asia; and in the Philippines, where it is called Tawas.

    Alum bar

Posted by Paul on 2nd Jun 2015

Never heard of or used an 'Alum Bar' before but this is a good product. Much easier to use than a regular styptic pencil and far less severe when applied. Don't know if this brand is any better or worse than other brands but I'm pretty happy with this one. Great price too, it looks like it will last for months and months!
